Why we use immunosuppressant drug?
1.Autoimmune Diseases:
- Autoimmune diseases occur when the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy cells and tissues. Immunosuppressants help prevent further cell damage and inflammation by holding back the immune response. They can even induce remission in some autoimmune diseases.
- Conditions that may require immunosuppressants include:
- *Alopecia areata*
- *Inflammatory bowel disease* (such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis)
- *Lupus*
- *Multiple sclerosis (MS)*
- *Psoriasis* or *psoriatic arthritis*
- *Rheumatoid arthritis (RA)*¹.
2. Organ Transplants:
- After *organ transplantation*, the recipient's immune system may recognize the transplanted organ as foreign and attack it. Immunosuppressants are crucial to prevent this rejection.
- People who receive *kidney, **heart, **liver*, or other organ transplants rely on these drugs to ensure their immune systems don't harm the newly transplanted organ.
- The goal is to balance rejection prevention with minimizing side effects of the drugs³.
3. Stem Cell (Bone Marrow) Transplants:
- Stem cell transplants (also known as bone marrow transplants) are used to treat conditions like *blood cancers, **blood disorders, and **bone marrow issues*.
- After a stem cell transplant, the new immune system may attack the recipient's healthy tissues and organs (a condition called *graft-versus-host disease*). Immunosuppressants help lower the risk of this complication.
- These drugs are administered during and after the transplant to ensure the body accepts the new immune system¹.
4. Cancer Treatment:
- Some immunosuppressants are now used to treat certain cancers. They work by modulating the immune response to target cancer cells more effectively.
- However, this use is specific to certain cases and requires careful monitoring².
Remember that while immunosuppressants are valuable, they also weaken the immune system, making individuals more susceptible to infections. Healthcare providers carefully weigh the benefits and risks when prescribing these medications.
